Why ESG matters
ESG has become a crucial topic, especially in tech: progress shouldn’t come at the expense of people or the planet. At the end of the day, it’s about making intentional choices now that allow us to grow without taking more than we give back. ESG helps bring that mindset into the workplace in a structured way.
Alumio’s ESG journey didn’t start with a big strategy document, it started organically. Our values of inclusivity, transparency, and respect were already part of our DNA. Over time, we began to formalize these values, turning them into clear initiatives, policies, and goals. But we never want ESG to become a buzzword. It has to be practiced, lived, and revisited regularly. Our team plays a big role in that: their ideas, feedback, and energy keep ESG active and evolving.
Environmental: Building a sustainable foundation
Becoming a paperless company
We’re very close: around 80% of our processes are now fully digital. As a digital-first platform, going paperless simply makes sense. It reduces waste and aligns our day-to-day operations with our long-term goals.
Reducing emissions through smarter work habits
Remote-first work significantly cuts down on commuting emissions, and most of our team works from home. For office days, we encourage the use of bikes or public transport by choosing accessible office locations and supporting greener travel options.
Creating an eco-friendly workspace
Small habits make a big impact. In our office, we focus on proper recycling systems, energy-efficient lighting, minimizing plastic use, and reducing food waste during lunch. These may seem like small steps, but they build a culture of awareness and responsibility.
Social: Putting people first
Diversity and inclusion
One of the things I’m most proud of at Alumio is that our team is culturally diverse, globally distributed, and united by shared values. We hire based on talent, mindset, and values, not geography. This naturally creates a diverse workforce, but inclusion requires active effort. We make sure every voice is heard, and everyone feels safe to contribute and challenge ideas.
Women at Alumio
I’ve seen great progress over the last few years: more women joining technical and leadership roles and contributing to key initiatives. We support women through mentorship, empowerment, and by ensuring they are represented in decision-making.
Work-life balance
Work-life balance isn’t a perk at Alumio, it’s a baseline expectation. We focus on outcomes, not hours. People are trusted to structure their day around their energy, family life, and personal needs. This leads to healthier, happier, and more productive teams. Within this work-life balance culture we have created, we also prioritize family time. After all, life happens, and family always comes first. We offer flexibility for parents and caregivers, whether that means rearranging schedules, working asynchronously, or adjusting workloads temporarily.
Social wellbeing
Our social initiatives, like the 4-mile run in Groningen or our weekly padel sessions, bring people together in a way that goes beyond meetings and KPIs. They strengthen bonds and boost wellbeing, keeping us active and reminding us that creating meaningful relationships outside of typical work environments matters.
Governance: Integrity behind the scenes
Security and compliance
Governance is the quiet hero of ESG: the part people don't always see but that impacts everything. For us, governance means acting with integrity even when no one is watching. Transparency, ethical decision-making, and accountability are at the core of our operations.
As an integration platform, protecting information is non-negotiable. We’re ISO 27001 certified and committed to helping customers stay compliant with GDPR, SOC 2, and other crucial standards. To keep our team sharp, we invest in ongoing security training, phishing simulations, and awareness programs. After all, security isn’t just an IT responsibility, it’s everyone’s.
Leadership accountability
We believe trust is built through transparency. That’s why our leadership team regularly shares updates on goals, financials, challenges, and decisions. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and offer feedback. This openness creates alignment and clarity across the entire organization.
The next stage of our ESG journey
For companies wanting to start or strengthen their ESG efforts, my advice is simple: start small, but start genuinely. Pick the areas that matter most to your people and your industry. Anchor them in real actions, and treat ESG as a continuous journey, not a marketing exercise.
At Alumio, I’d say we’re in the “strong foundation” phase. We’ve embedded ESG into our culture, operations, and values. Our next step is to measure and scale our impact so we can keep improving year after year. ESG isn’t something we do on the side, it’s part of who we are and how we want to grow. And we’re just getting started.
